Comprehensive Dry Shampoo Analysis: Beyond the Zone Dry Shampoo and Volumizing Powder

Dry Shampoo Cost: $6.99 – $7.59 CAD from Sally Beauty

Volumizing Powder Cost: $6.79 – $7.49 CAD from Sally Beauty

(I purchased two dry shampoo and one powder on a buy 2 get 1 free deal so I paid about $15 for all three)

Thoughts:

I went into Sally Beauty looking for a powder form dry shampoo as I had tried some of my friend’s once when I was visiting and wanted to try it again and see how I liked it. The girl at the store recommended this brand and their volumizing powder. I thought, “well I have very flat hair so that wont hurt” and picked up the powder, regular dry shampoo, and the “blonde” dry shampoo.

To start, I will review the dry shampoo spray cans. I have tried both the dry shampoos and don’t personally notice a difference in the performance. I have blonde hair so white cast isn’t that much of a concern for me anyways. There is also a shampoo for dark hair that might be worth checking out if you have trouble finding dry shampoos that don’t turn your roots lighter, but I haven’t tried it so I can’t say for sure!

I personally like the smell. But I think it’s because it reminds me of my Aunt’s salon that she used to have in her basement when I was younger, it makes me a bit nostalgic. I am not sure whether the average person would like the smell that much. But my favourite part about it is that the smell isn’t overwhelming like many of the drug store brands that I have tried. As I am writing this it has been about 10 minutes since I applied the product and I can barely smell it in my hair anymore. It is also very light and doesn’t feel like I have loaded it up with product.

My least favourite thing about this product is that it’s grease absorption is little to none, unfortunately. While it feels like I don’t have any product in my hair, it also looks like it (lol). I have now hopefully tried both the blonde and the regular dry shampoos and always have to follow up with another drug store product.

My thoughts on the volumizing powder are also disappointing. The day after I purchased the product I had just washed my hair and blow dried it and was getting ready to leave for work and I thought “Oh I should throw some of the powder in my roots and see what it does!” So I sprinkled a small amount on my fingers to see what it was like and then sprinkled it all through my roots and started to shake it into my hair. OH MY. The texture of this powder on your hair feels sticky - it’s so bizarre. It was terrible!!! If I had had time I would have washed my hair again. All day my hair felt sticky and stiff and the worst part was that it didn’t even add any volume. I have since tried it with dirty hair and had similar results to the dry shampoo but with the added terrible stickiness to my roots.

I was really hopeful for these products but unfortunately I don’t think any of the three I tried are worth the price so I will not be repurchasing!

Have you tried any of these products? What did you think? Would you ever try a volumizing powder?
